Güler Güçlü

Wherever we are in the world, we have gradually started to resemble each other. Even if we are physically thousands of kilometers apart, we are nourished by the same images and information flow. Our sorrows and joys are determined by algorithms, yet each of us feels different and unique.
As a part of this world, I address the relentless homogenization of individuals and consequently society, both through passive and stagnant figures, and individuals who live according to commands imposed by governments, social media, fashion, or lawmakers. I am referring to manageable individuals who lack the authority to make decisions in their actions.
I create sculptures with the conceptual contribution of concrete, a gray and cold building material. My figures are genderless and stable. They are genderless because I want to point directly to humanity; I do not desire the layers of meaning that gender or physical differences would bring. Their eyes and thoughts are covered or replaced by rough and rigid geometric masses that have become their limbs, representing the contemporary human who is disconnected from nature, unable to communicate with oneself and the surroundings, our artificial nature, the city, and urban dwellers. I approach them through a pure human emphasis, rather than any specific group, gender, or nationality.
