Kemal Tufan

Kemal Tufan was born in Silivri, Istanbul in 1962.
He graduated from the Industrial Engineering Department of Technical University of Istanbul in 1985 and the Sculpture Department of Mimar Sinan Fine Art University, Istanbul in 1994.
He worked as a choreographer at the City Theater of the Metropolitan Municipality of Istanbul. He was a choreographer, stage designer, actor, and dancer with various theatre and modern dance companies between 1989 and 1991. He danced and taught Turkish Folk Dances since 1977 for more than 20 years.

Tufan participated in international symposiums, exhibitions, biennials, conferences and created large outdoor public sculptures in Turkey, Finland, Romania, Holland, Belgium, Japan, Israel, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Italy, Denmark, Germany, Sweden, The United Arab Emirates, Scotland, Egypt, Bahrain, Serbia, Mexico, Portugal, Taiwan, Indonesia, China, Argentina, Chile, South Korea, Brazil, India, Morocco, Greece, France, Spain, Australia, and the USA.

Kemal Tufan was curator of:

International Buyukcekmece Sculpture Symposiums in Istanbul between 2002-2014. Yesemek Biennial in Gaziantep Southeast Turkey between 2005-2007.

Young Sculptors in Koru Municipality, Yalova, Turkey in 2015.

Besiktas International Sculpture Symposiums in Istanbul between 2016-2017.

Bento Gonçalves International Sculpture Symposium in Brasil in 2016 and 2023.

Puerto Vallarta International Scultors Forums in Mexico in 2017 and 2018. Sculpture Symposium in Historical Shipyard of Haliç in Istanbul in 2020.

In addition to sculpture, Tufan also works in interdisciplinary arts such as video, art performances and installations.

His primary concept in art is ‘contrasts & contradictions’ of human beings in political and social life. He observes nature and interprets forms in his sculptures.

Kemal Tufan has been an adjunct professor at the Marmara University, Fine Art Faculty, Sculpture Department since 2005.

His home and studio are based in Istanbul.
